Abstract
This paper draws on Jürgen Habermas’s theory of the public sphere to examine how French existentialist literature of the 1940s constituted a literary public sphere through the interrelated dimensions of space, text, and media. First, it analyzes the creative practices of Jean-Paul Sartre and his contemporaries in public spaces such as cafés, revealing the interaction between literary production and the social sphere. Second, it explores how literary works transform private experience into public ethical reflection, thereby engaging readers as active subjects. Third, using the journal Les Temps modernes as a case study, it examines how literary works entered public discussion through the filtering of media gatekeepers. The paper concludes that literature is not merely an aesthetic activity but also a form of public practice, and that its circulation is shaped by the dynamic interplay of space, text, and media. Even in an era of fragmented online publics, the literary public sphere retains the potential to contribute to democratic deliberation and social critique through the reconstruction of interconnected physical and virtual spaces.
